This time the problem starts with Charlotte's mother - a locket with a picture of a man not her husband in it has gone missing. Charlotte goes to help and when mother's indiscretion is clear calls in her sister to help ward off problems. Then a neighbor winds up dead under odd straits and Thomas must get involved. Random threads are pulled away. Lots of repeat characters. Strange that so many of the nice hoods have murders and Pitt always gets assigned. Just can't decide on the series like each mystery but as a whole not sure what to do with the style.Product details

Wow! Complex plot, well-loved characters (Pitt and Charlotte, Emily, Caroline, and mysterious man of mystery) and ending I never saw coming.
this is such a good read and suspenseful. i'm reading my way through the series and this one especially was very suspenseful and intriguing.
I pick an author that interests me each summer and try to read all that they have written. Anne Perry is a fantastic writer. The characters come alive on the page and you can really picture the scenes. If you love Victorian England and you love murder mysteries...You'll love Anne Perry books.
Anne Perry writes great mysteries and develops her characters quite well. This book kept you on edge until the end. It is possible some will feel the end is a letdown, and then again maybe not.
These vintage mysteries draw you in from the beginning. Husband and wife, working in different social circles, manage to ferret out the truth ingeniously. Good stories, authentic and well-written.
When Mina dies unexpectedly Inspector Thomas Pitt must determine whether it is suicide or murder. Unexpected passions and plot twists keep this mystery moving swiftly to a satisfying conclusion!
Anne Perry never fails to be worthy of a top score.
It is truly amazing how Anne Perry can set her scene and include very similar characters and from the limited ingredients produce a totally original mix of perverse thought and behaviour hidden by the restricted facade of late Victorian manners , morals and terror of scandal
Inspector Pitt , as always , tenacious yet sensitive resolves another crime , revealing what needs to be revealed while concealing details that are best forgotten.
